While Less than Container Load (LCL) shipping is available, it typically incurs a higher cost per unit compared to FCL. This is because freight forwarders prefer FCL—it’s more efficient and less complex than consolidating multiple LCL shipments into one container. There is a break-even point where the cost of a large LCL shipment matches that of a 20-foot FCL container. This tipping point varies based on origin, destination, and market conditions.
